The primary focus of my research is to expand and validate a framework through which heterogeneous computing devices that integrate FPGAs, GPUs, and CPUs can be effectively utilized to reduce both the execution time and the energy consumption attributes of some existing complex scientific applications in multimedia, bioinformatics, image processing, and general science fields as compared to traditional single-core central processing unit-based implementations. The influential hypothesis that motivated the proposed research is that it is permissible to efficiently restructure some existing complex scientific applications by utilizing the OpenCL, OpenACC, and other standards high-level tools in a manner that shows improved run-time characteristics and energy consumption characteristics when compared to a sequential single-core CPU implementation.
