Renal replacement therapy in the pediatric intensive care unit
One of the most common complications in the PICU is the development of renal insufficiency - either directly from nephrotoxic drugs, or indirectly from systemic disorders such as shock or sepsis. To that end, many PICU patients have fluid overload or solute accumulation, and renal replacement therapy (RRT) musty be undergone. I study the different mechanisms for RRT and how to minimize their complications in PICU patients.
Extracorporeal life support (ECLS)
ECLS, otherwise known as extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), is a new modality used in the support and therapy of some of the sickest patients in the PICU.
